New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is 23 but is already sharing the dugout with legendary hitters like Aaron Judge, a two time MVP and Giancarlo Stanton, a one time MVP. Both have their resumes stacked with All-Star accolades and Silver Slugger awards. Seeing them every day at work, you learn a thing or two, like Volpe.
The shortstop, on Friday's episode of "Roommates Show," opened up on sharing the dugout, locker room and baseball field, watching these big guns go about their day-to-day routine. "Self-awareness and Confidence" were the words Volpe highlighted while talking about their consistency.
"Yeah, I think we mentioned this a little earlier, but for me, watching them every single day, I think what stands out is how self-aware they are—of their body, of where they’re at," Volpe said (14:02 onwards). "That self-awareness helps them make adjustments quicker, and I think it’s how they stay consistent.
"When they feel a little off, they know exactly the adjustment they need to make. It’s so cool to see. You’ll watch them working in the cage on something small that you don’t fully understand at the moment, and then you see it translate to the game. I think that’s what makes them who they are — their confidence and self-awareness."
Anthony Volpe and Aaron Judge shared a mentor-mentee moment during World Series
Offense was difficult to come by for the New York Yankees during the World Series. The only game they won against the Dodgers in that series was in large part thanks to Anthony Volpe's grand slam.
The Yankees were down 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning when they loaded the bases for the shortstop to capitalize. Volpe shot the first pitch he got to the stands for a grand slam as the Yankees took a 5-2 lead after the innings.
After the home run, when Volpe reached the plate, Aaron Judge was waiting for him, and the mentor-mentee duo leaped in the air to celebrate the home run.
Aaron Judge is set to be there for seven more years for the Yankees. The captain sees a lot of upside in Anthony Volpe, who won't become a free agent until 2027.
