Colorado Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle earned his second Gold Glove this year while hitting .260 with 72 RBIs, including 23 home runs. The 26-year-old is a player to watch for in the future as he reminds certain analysts of a previous club legend.
On Saturday's episode of "DNVR Sports" podcast, analyst Christian Saez backed Doyle's MVP potential:
"I think Doyle has the chance to burst out, like he's batting .320 by the end of the season, hitting 33 home runs, winning another Gold Glove and going to the All-Star Game. I think that could be Doyle, like I think that's the type of season he could have next year." [54:50]
He further compared Doyle to New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge:
"I think because he puts it all together. Aaron Judge won the AL MVP. Aaron Judge is a great hitter, hits a thousand home runs, but the dude is not winning you Gold Glove after Gold Glove after Gold Glove. He's not known for his defense, he's not known for a lot of other factors on the field.
"I know he has some decent defensive stats. ... But he's not doing what Brenton Doyle does in the outfield." [55:11]
Saez then likened Doyle to former Rockies legend Nolan Arenado, whose all-around abilities saw him win four Silver Slugger awards, three Home Run Leader titles, two RBI Leader titles and an impressive seven consecutive Gold Gloves during his time in Colorado.
"I think the depth that Brenton Doyle plays at defensively and offensively," Saez said. "Or possibly with his bat, gives him a better chance to possibly become more of that Nolan Arenado type of player for the Rockies." [55:55]
Brenton Doyle's second Gold Glove comes with more offensive prowess
Brenton Doyle became the first outfielder in National League history to win two Gold Gloves in his first two seasons. Since 2023, he has had the highest Outs Above Average among qualified outfielders and ranks second in Defensive Runs Saved.
Even though he won his maiden Gold Glove in his rookie season, Doyle struggled offensively, hitting just .203. What set this year apart from his 2023 campaign was his improvement at the plate, evident in his 23 home runs compared to his 10 last year.
For a Rockies team that has averaged nearly 100 losses in the last three seasons, it is important for players like Doyle to step up and continue doing well in an era of rebuild.
