The MLB offseason is moving quick into the latter stages and keeping that in mind, teams are also making quick movements to capitalize on each and every movement to form solid and competitive rosters to compete in the 2025 season.
The Toronto Blue Jays are no different than any other team in that realm as they are moving on quickly after their recent disappointment in the pursuit of Japanese pitching prodigy Roki Sasaki, who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for $6.5 million on Friday.
The Blue Jays now reportedly have former New York Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso, who is going through free agency, on their radar, as confirmed by MLB insider Jon Heyman.
On Saturday, Jon Heyman took to his X handle to make a post regarding Toronto's recent offseason movements after missing out on signing Sasaki.
In the light of setbacks like Juan Soto joining the New York Mets and Sasaki signing with the LA Dodgers, the Toronto Blue Jays have now turned their attention towards Pete Alonso. He is one of the most sought-after free agents on the market.
Blue Jays target Anthony Santander and the imminent separation of Pete Alonso from the New York Mets
Toronto going after free-agent slugger Anthony Santander, along with Pete Alonso, shows that they are trying to improve the hitting department, which would be a great help for reliable hitters like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette.
Santander, who is 30 years, old slashed .235/.308/.506 after playing 155 games in the 2024 season.
Meanwhile, Alonso has faced a stanstill with his former team with regards to his contract situation. The Mets have reportedly offered Alonso a three-year, $90 million contract with opt-out options. But the Alonso camp was reportedly in pursuit of a $200 million contract.
In the 2024 season he played all 162 games for the Mets and hit .240/.329/.459. He had 88 RBI and managed to smash 34 home runs and steal three bases.
With that being said, after loosing Roki Sasaki, it will be worth noting how the Toronto Blue Jays move in the case of players who are still free agents and how this is going to influence their offseason in the days to come.
