The 37-foot-2-inch-high Green Monster in the left field of Red Sox's Fenway Park couldn't help land Juan Soto, but Alex Bregman is the next best hitter on the market who could use those dimensions to his advantage.
The Red Sox entered the Soto sweepstakes, reportedly making a competitive offer, but the outfielder agreed a better deal with the New York Mets. However, with the ownership very clear on improving the roster, the Red Sox are eyeing Bregman who shares a good bond with manager Alex Cora.
In Monday's edition of CBS Sports HQ, MLB insider Jim Bowden list down factors that could come into play for the Red Sox to sign the third baseman.
"He's good friends with Alex Bregman," Bowden said (4:51 onwards). "I had Alex Cora on my radio show, my SiriusXM radio show, this afternoon, and the thing he really pointed out was how much they need a right-handed pull hitter—someone who can pull the ball into the Green Monster in left field. That’s something they lack.
"They’ve got a lot of left-handed hitters, which play well at Fenway, but they need better balance. That really opens up the possibility of Alex Bregman because Bregman’s a dead pull hitter. He performs best with a short left field like in Houston, and Fenway Park fits that perfectly. Plus, he’s got a relationship with Alex Cora."
Rafael Devers will need to move to first base if Red Sox signs Alex Bregman, says Jim Bowden
Jim Bowden, who talked with Alex Cora on his show, reported that the manager/GM will have to first discuss with third baseman Rafael Devers about potentially moving him to first base in case they are successful in landing Alex Bregman.
"Before they could sign Bregman, Alex Cora said he’d personally have to call Rafael Devers, which they haven’t done yet, to discuss moving him to first base. That’s something that would need to happen before signing Bregman," Bowden added.
In the conversation, Jim Bowden also mentioned that the Red Sox ownership are committed to stitching a team that could win "92 games in the season." For that, they have given their GM an "empty checkbook" during winter meetings.
The Red Sox could also potentially keep an eye out for other notable free agents, like Pete Alonso, Corbin Burnes and Max Fried.
