A number of teams are still interested in signing Alex Bregman but the 2x All-Star is yet to sign a deal. As per reports, the Boston Red Sox have been particularly interested in acquiring the services of the third baseman and are ready to offer him a contract.
Signing Alex Bregman would fix two crucial things for the Red Sox, as per former New York Mets General Manager Jim Duquette. Speaking on the MLB Network Radio, Duquette said:
"Their one big issue that they haven't addressed yet is their infield defense. They also need a right handed bat. So those two things could be accomplished with one signing, I think, and that's get Bregman, and you move Devers to first, like, I think you get better at both places."
Duquette suggested moving regular 3B, Rafael Devers to the other corner. This would put trade candidate Triston Casas' position in question, but it would be more viable for the Red Sox to keep Casas and sign Bregman.
Should Red Sox add Alex Bregman as a 2B instead
Earlier in the offseason in November, Alex Bregman's agent Scott Boras had stated that he would be open to play in the middle of the diamond.
"You just don't have many players on the dirt that do what he does," Boras had said. "Bregman can play second base, third base, his leadership (is also valuable). It's a market certainly that the Astros are very aware is very healthy to him."
The Red Sox might consider the possibility but the move would need Bregman to hone his second base defensive skills. He has played just nine games in his career at 2B.
As per reports, the Red Sox's main competitors are the Detroit Tigers who are in a pickle themselves with a lackluster diamond defense. The Tigers added Gleyber Torres on a one-year $15 million deal on Friday.
