The Houston Astros are eyeing a possible extension for All-Star slugger Alex Bregman. The 30-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the Houston-based club and will be a free agent next season if no new extension is reached between the parties.
Bregman is in decent form for the Astros this season, appearing in 122 games, hitting .261 with an OPS of .764, 21 HRs and 61 RBIs. However, the club has not directly contacted the player to extend his stay beyond 2025.
According to journalist Jeff Passan, an anonymous general manager has discussed Bregman's possible free agency. He said the star slugger still has a lot to deliver and could be an asset to the Astros clubhouse.
“He would completely change our clubhouse for the better."
Although he has been decent, Bregman hasn't had an All-Star-level performance. He is also suffering from an elbow injury. However, with his hitting prowess, he will surely attract many suitors.
Mets eyeing possible move for Astros' Alex Bregman, as per insider
According to insider Ken Rosenthal, the New York Mets are one of the clubs eyeing Bregman.
"The market for third basemen should be interesting. Besides the Astros and Giants, the teams with obvious needs include the Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees, presuming they move Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second as a replacement for Gleyber Torres. The Mets also could be a possibility if they don’t view Mark Vientos as a long-term answer," Rosenthal wrote.
Rosenthal also mentioned if San Francisco Giant Matt Champman opts for free agency, he might be the club's favorite instead of Bregman. Even though their seasons are nearly identical, Champman has shown superior defensive performance, with better bWAR (5.7) than Bregman (2.7).
