Former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman is reportedly close to reaching an agreement with the Boston Red Sox, where he's expected to move into second base.

The 30-year-old entered free agency this winter and remains one of the biggest names remaining in the market. While several teams have been linked with the infielder, MLB insider Hector Gomez reported (via Carlos Barega) that Bregman is heading to join the Red Sox in the AL East.

Since making his MLB debut with the Houston Astros in 2016, Alex Bregman has made two All-Star appearances and won the World Series twice. He's a proven bat with elite defensive record.

The Boston Red Sox have been among the favorites to land Bregman for a while, but no agreement has been reached with the player, giving other teams an opportunity to sign him.

Nonetheless, the Red Sox remain in the mix, but it might mean a change in position for the third baseman. Rafael Devers has made the Red Sox third base his own, meaning that Bregman would most likely play second base if the move happens.

Astros manager Joe Espada shares a message for Alex Bregman amid free agency

While Alex Bregman continues to explore free agency, his former manager Joe Espada has made it clear that he wants the player to re-sign with the club.

The Houston Astros manager worked with Bregman for six years as a coach before takinig the manager's job last season. In a video shared by FOX's Nate Griffin, Espada shared a message for the infielder:

“Well, he has not signed with anyone right? So ... Our arms are still open. The door is still open. There’s always a chance. But right now, we are still in conversations with not only him but with other free agent players. So, we'll see.”

While several MLB teams have had positive talks with Bregman, he hasn't signed with any team yet. As long as that remains the case, the Astros front office will remain hopeful of a reunion.
