The Alex Bregman market seems to be heating up. At this point, he is the most valuable free agent left on the market, as he accumulated 8.6 fWAR in the last two seasons with the Houston Astros. Now, several teams are starting to court him, and MLB insider Matt Vasgersian has three fits he sees for the two-time All-Star.
On Friday in "Hot Stove," Vasgersian said the Toronto Blue Jays could use the third baseman:
"Alex Bregman, middle of the Toronto lineup. This I love, just from a fan standpoint, he is such a missing ingredient there, it would be a perfect fit for me."
The analyst also said he loves the idea of Bregman joining his former manager with the Detroit Tigers. He also floated the idea of a positional change so that he could go to the middle of the Boston Red Sox order:
"There's a lot of ifs that would need to happen for him to go to Boston."
Those three teams could use Bregman, according to Vasgersian. They're not alone, though. The New York Yankees have also been linked to Bregman, as have the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets.
MLB reporter throws water on Alex Bregman to Boston idea
The Red Sox would have to shift around their infield to make an Alex Bregman signing work. They could move Rafael Devers to first, though Triston Casas seems to have that spot locked down. Devers could also DH to open up time for Bregman.
Bregman could move to second base. There are options, but MLB reporter Jon Heyman doesn't see it happening anymore. He said via NESN:
“I think the Red Sox are an outside possibility at this point. I don’t think it’s as strong as it was previously.”
Boston's Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow said on Monday that Casas isn't going to be traded, which means he's probably going to continue playing first base. As long as he does, that limits what they can do with their infield and it limits their likelihood of signing Bregman and pairing him with Devers in the middle of their lineup.
