New York Mets third baseman Mark Vientos has said that despite the incredible last few months, the Blue and Orange camp is remaining level-headed going into the most important stretch of the campaign. After a slow 22-23 start to the campaign, it looked like a disappointing Mets campaign was on the cards.
At the start of June, the Mets were trailing their division rivals, the Atlanta Braves, by 10 games and were 11 games under .500.
Fast forward to today and the New York outfit is firmly in the race for a National League wild card spot. Their 8-4 win over the Braves on Friday saw them overtake Atlanta in the standings.
From potentially going out with a whimper to their transformation that now sees them as genuine playoff contenders, there is certainly cause for celebration in the Mets camp.
However, Vientos has shed some light on how the team, despite being happy with the recent form, is fully focused on carrying it into the biggest games of the season. Speaking to SNY TV, Vientos said:
"Feels great [to have the top WC spot] for sure. Feels like a couple of months ago everyone was down in the dumps. A lot of baseball left. All we can do is pat ourselves on the back real quick and get back to work," Mark Vientos said.
Talking about the positive energy within the team that has only been getting better with every passing game, Vientos added:
"Just to be a part of that game is awesome to be a part of this clubhouse, it’s special. The energy is amazing. I’m excited for sure."
Vientos is having a breakout season with the Mets this season. He has a .286 average with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs.
Mets' Mark Vientos speaks on Kodai Senga calf strain
A great night at Citi Field had a bit of a sting in its tail, as returning ace Kodai Senga was placed back on the injury list after picking up a calf injury on Friday against the Atlanta Braves. It is not yet known how serious the injury is and how long the pitcher will be out for.
Speaking about the injury sustained by his teammate, Mark Vientos accepted that losing Senga will undoubtedly be a big loss, but it is one that the squad is good enough to overcome.
"Senga is one of the best pitchers, but we’ve been doing our thing without him and we’re just going to keep that energy. I hope for the best and I hope he’s with us. But I think we’re good," Vientos said.
With Mark Vientos and co. having adopted a positive mindset, the Mets will be fully focused on widening the gap with fellow wild card challengers the Braves by the time the weekend is over.
