The Toronto Blue Jays made their first big acquisition of the off-season after completing a move for All-Star second baseman Andres Gimenez from the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night.
The Venezuelan was traded away by the Guardians along with right-handed reliever Nic Sandlin in a swap for first baseman Spencer Horwitz and outfield prospect Nick Mitchell from the Blue Jays.
On Wednesday evening, Gimenez posted an emotional message of gratitude to the Guardians and their fanbase on Instagram.
Gimenez spent four seasons with the Cleveland Guardians after he was traded by the New York Mets following his rookie campaign in 2020. Gimenez enjoyed an excellent 2022 campaign, winning his maiden All-Star Game call-up and finishing in sixth place in the MVP voting. He is regarded as one of the best defensive infielders in the game with three straight Gold Gloves.
"Cleveland, it has been a privilege to be a part of this amazing organization and fanbase, and I'm incredibly grateful for my time here," Gimenez wrote on his Instagram post. "This team has given me so many unforgettable memories and has been a truly special chapter of my life.
"To the fans, your passion, support, and energy fueled me every step of the way," he added. "Cleveland will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for making this journey so meaningful."
The Guardians won the AL Central division title in 2024 and made a deep run into the postseason before they were eliminated in the American League Championship Series by the New York Yankees.
On the other hand, the Blue Jays had a hugely disappointing campaign in 2024, finishing in last place in the AL East despite going into the season with high expectations.
Andres Gimenez certain to improve Blues Jays defense
Andres Gimenez will likely slot straight into their lineup as Spencer Horowitz was the primary second baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2024. Horowitz had a solid season batting .265/.357/.433 with 12 home runs, 40 RBIs and 125 OPS+. However, he also had -12 defensive runs saved against his name.
The Blue Jays probably wanted to shore up their defense on the left side of the infield to help their pitching staff. Moreover, Gimenez could also play shortstop, so the Blue Jays could switch him with Bo Bichette or even use the latter for another trade move.
