The Pittsburgh Pirates recently placed designated hitter Andrew McCutchen on the 10-day injured list. During the team’s 5-3 win against the Seattle Mariners on Friday, he suffered an injury, leading to him being sidelined.
Andrew McCutchen was injured while running the bases in the seventh inning of the game. He hit a single off Mariners’ pitcher Austin Voth but limped while running to first base. After feeling discomfort in his leg, he was replaced by pitch-runner Ji Hwan Bae.
McCutchen was later found to have left knee inflammation, which led to him being placed on the injured list on Saturday. Before leaving Friday’s game, the five-time All-Star had one hit in three at-bats, with one RBI and one strikeout.
So far, in the 101 games he has played in the 2024 season, Andrew McCutchen is batting .235 with 16 home runs, 40 RBIs, 51 walks, and a .741 OPS. The 2013 National League MVP is on an 11-game hitting streak, his longest of the season.
Following a strong 2023 season, Andrew McCutchen inked a one-year, $5 million contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates in December. His absence is certainly a big hit for the Pirates, but despite his unavailability, they won 7-2 in the second game of their series against the Mariners on Saturday.
Pirates recalled Alika Williams as a corresponding move for Andrew McCutchen being placed on IL
To cover for Andrew McCutchen on the injured list, the Pittsburgh Pirates recalled Alika Williams from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday as a corresponding move.
This season, Williams has played 25 games in the majors for the Pirates, recording a .210 batting average with 13 hits in 62 at-bats, three RBIs, and 14 stolen bases. In the minors, he had a batting average of .298 with a .769 OPS and 13 RBIs in 162 plate appearances.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are 58-64 and are ranked fifth in the NL Central. The Pirates are six games behind the wild card spot. They will face the Seattle Mariners in their series finale on Sunday at PNC Park.
