The Los Angeles Angels have had a fine offseason thus far. They acquired slugger Jorge Soler through a trade and signed left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi to a three-year deal earlier this offseason.
They have also made some smaller deals, signing veteran RHP Kyle Hendricks to a one-year deal. The Halos also signed Tim Anderson to a minor-league contract this week.
However, the club may not be done adding players this winter. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal told Alanna Rizzo on Foul Territory that the team is still considering a few free agents.
"I believe they are in play for a number of free agents right now and it's just a matter of where the market goes and who might want to play for them," said Rosenthal.
Rosenthal likes the club's chances of grabbing another player or two before pitchers and catchers report to camp. He nearly guaranteed the chances of another signing.
"They've made moves to compete. Kikuchi being the foremost among them and I would expect that they are going to pickoff some players in the weeks ahead. I wouldn't say guarentee it, but I would expect it," said Rosenthal.
The Angels could steal one of MLB's top free agents
The Angels have made a few solid moves this offseason but could still use another impact player. They need all the help they can get playing in the highly competitive American League West division.
The Houston Astros are always a team to watch out for with their consistencies over the years. The Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers have also been contenders over the years, and that should not change in 2025.
There's one player who could help the Halos rise up in the AL West, but he won't be cheap. Pete Alonso still sits on the open market after seeking a contract worth at least $200 million.
The Halos have a history of giving risky contracts to secure players. Just look at the $240 million deal they gave Albert Pujols when he was nearing the end of his career.
It would take some planning and execution for this deal to get done. L.A. could look at trading Nolan Schanuel to open the door for Alonso. Trading Schanuel could also bring the club some value, as the young slugger had a solid 2024 season.
