Last Sunday, Los Angeles Angels slugger Anthony Rendon was placed on the 10-day IL with what the team called a left hamstring sprain. This came right after the club announced right-handed pitcher Robert Stephenson would need Tommy John surgery, ending his 2024 season.
On Friday, Rendon gave an update on his injury, which is not good. He revealed that he had a high-grade partial tear of his left hamstring, per The Athletic's Sam Blum.
The injury is far more severe than the Halos previously thought. Rendon expects to miss significant time as he recovers, which is frustrating for him given his recent injury history.
Rendon did not give a timetable for when he could return. This is not an injury that will heal itself overnight. It will be some time before he is back in the Halos' lineup.
Anthony Rendon is no stranger to making trips to the IL
Anthony Rendon has struggled to stay healthy since signing his 7-year, $245 million contract with the Halos in 2019. The former Washington Nationals star has constantly been hurt over the years.
In 2021, Rendon was limited to just 58 games. He suffered a left groin strain, left knee contusion, strained triceps, and strained left hamstring injury.
During the 2022 season, Rendon played in 47 games due to a season-ending surgery on his right wrist. Last year, a groin injury limited him to just 43 games.
His consistent trips to the IL have made it hard for the Angels to get it going. Currently, they have Miguel Sano who has been playing third base with Rendon injured.
Expect that to stay the same, with Rendon expected to miss significant time. Sano has done well, slashing .271/.362/.373 with three doubles and a home run through 20 starts.
