Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo turned 35 on Tuesday. Rizzo celebrated his special day with charitable works. The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation hosted 21 children and their families affected by pediatric cancer at FAO Schwarz and surprised the kids with a $1,000 shopping spree.
MLB posted a video showing Rizzo celebrating his birthday with children at the FAO Schwarz, with shop staff and kids singing the birthday song for him.
“21 years old,” Rizzo jokingly said. (h/t - MLB)
Rizzo suffered a fractured forearm and has been on IL since June without any timeline to return. To fill his gap at first base, the Yankees called up their prospect Ben Rice, who’s now their everyday 1B until Rizzo returns.
This season, Rizzo has 28 RBI and 32 runs with a stat line of .223/.289/.341 and an OPS of .630 in 70 games. He’s in no rush to return as the Yankees are almost guaranteed a playoff spot with their 68-47 record. They can even get a bye if they hold onto their momentum.
Although the club will certainly be happy to have their star infielder back, Rice is holding well in his rookie year for now.
Anthony Rizzo is excited about revisiting his Little League memory lane
The United States regional tournament is underway to get the best talents to compete in the Little League World Series. Further, this year’s MLB Little League Classic will feature the face-off between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers to add flair to the tournament. The game will happen at the historic Bowman Field in Williamsport on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Anthony Rizzo has a special connection to that place as he played there during his Little League days.
“It’s a lot of fun. Getting there was always the goal of mine when I was a Little Leaguer and it’s so cool," he said on Tuesday (via YES Network). "Excitement that time of the year brings of Little League baseball and baseball in general.
“To be able to play in Williamsport is a lot of fun. It breaks up the grind of the season. We get to spend some time with the kids, sled down the hill. Just enjoy that day, It’s a small, intimate game. It brings you back to kind of your minor league days… It’s fun. It brings you back to the joy that you see little kids having.”
The young kids can see Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Rizzo up close and draw some inspiration.
