New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo left Sunday’s game early against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. After his departure, the Yankees struggled to hold their ground and eventually lost the game 9-3.
In the seventh inning, Rizzo got on base because of an error by first baseman Dominic Smith. While running, he collided with Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino and fell on his right arm.
Rizzo was clearly in pain and stayed on the ground while being checked by manager Aaron Boone and two trainers. He subsequently left the game and was replaced by pinch-runner Oswaldo Cabrera.
The three-time All-Star had hurt his right hand and wrist in the collision. Bernardino was also replaced with Zack Kelly after the incident.
After undergoing further testing on Monday, Rizzo was revealed to have an arm fracture that is expected to keep him out for four to six weeks, as per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
This is the second year in a row that a collision on the base will cause Rizzo to miss a lot of game time. Last season, he collided with Fernando Tatis Jr. while Tatis was returning to first base but continued playing for two more months, with his performance worsening.
In early August, he was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome, which ended his season. Anthony Rizzo inked a two-year, $40 million contract with the New York Yankees in November 2022.
DJ LeMahieu could hold down first base while Anthony Rizzo is out
New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu could be shifted to first base with Anthony Rizzo heading to the injured list. Oswaldo Cabrera could play on third base to fill in for LeMahieu.
LeMahieu started the 2024 season on IL after injuring his right foot, resulting in a non-displaced fracture before the season started. He returned to the Yankees on May 28, 2024, but since returning, he has only batted .188 with a .491 OPS and hasn't hit any extra-base hits in 15 games.
The Bronx Bombers also have two promising first base options, Ben Rice and T.J. Rumfield playing for their Triple-A team, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Rice, who plays catcher and first base, has been impressive since moving up from Double-A Somerset, batting .333 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in Triple-A.
Rumfield is also performing well for the RailRiders, hitting .303 with five home runs, and 32 RBIs in 47 Triple-A games through Sunday.
The New York Yankees open a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.
