After falling short of several blue-chip free agents this offseason, the Toronto Blue Jays are hot on the trail of former Baltimore Orioles slugger Anthony Santander. MLB insider Hector Gomez, who initially reported the Blue Jays to be a top contender to sign him, said on Wednesday that Mark Shapiro's team has offered the outfielder a four-year, $82 million deal.
Santander, who had a career year with the Orioles in 2024, hitting .235 and 44 home runs, is looking to sign a long-term deal.
While nothing is set in stone, Gomez identified LA Angels, New York Mets, Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros and the Orioles among those who have shown interest in signing Santander.
The Blue Jays will likely be all-in to sign Santander after their failed pursuits for Juan Soto – who signed with the New York Mets on a record 15-year, $765 million deal – and Teoscar Hernandez, who re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a three-year, $66 million deal.
Anthony Santander's contract projections
Coming off a 40+ homer season is bound to add a few extra million to Anthony Santander's contract. According to Mark Feinsand, Santander could land a nine-figure deal over five years.
However, he is not expected to best the five-year, $100 million deal Nick Castellanos signed with the Philadelphia Phillies before the 2022 season.
The Blue Jays' current reported contract offer comes near but with so much interest for him, $82 million might not be enough to close the outfielder.
MLB writer Keegan Matheson believes no one is more inclined to sign Santander than the Blue Jays.
"Players who fit the Blue Jays keep flying off the board, but Anthony Santander remains. The Blue Jays know Santander well from his days with the Orioles – perhaps too well, after some of his performance against them – and he profiles well to fit their lineup," Matheson wrote via yardbarker.com.
Should the Blue Jays be successful in landing him, they'll likely shift their focus to making moves to bring them deeper into the AL East's competitive space.
