On October 23, the NLCS returned to Philly as the Arizona Diamondbacks went to bat with their season on the line. With the Phillies putting up their ace on the rubber, favor certainly seemed to be tipped in the way of the home team.
Coming into Monday's affair, Phillies starter Aaron Nola has surrendered just a pair of runs across 18 innings so far this postseason. In Game 2 against the D-Backs, Nola kept the Snakes scoreless through six, striking out seven.
However, the pending free agent could not recreate the magic on the mound. After coughing up four runs, Nola was headed to the dugout in the fifth inning. In the end, the Diamondbacks captured Game 6, 5-1.
"Snakes alive #NLCS" - MLB
Fans of the Arizona Diamondbacks are rejoicing at the news. Outscored mightily over the first two games of the series, manager Torey Lovullo has a lot to be proud of. Tomorrow's Game 7 will be the first for the D-Backs since they bested the New York Yankees to win the 2001 World Series.
The offense for the D-Backs began early in the contest. Veteran outfielder Tommy Pham led off the second with a solo home run off of Aaron Nola. The very next batter, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., homered again. By the time the second was over, the Philadelphia Phillies trailed 3-0.
Later in the game, it was Ketel Marte, who has been the hottest hitter for the Arizona Diamondbacks this October. The walk-off hero of Game 3 hit an RBI triple before a single to make it 5-1 for his team. Marte is hitting .375/.400/.625 with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs this postseason.
Additionally, D-Backs starter Merrill Kelly picked up his second win of the postseason. Credited with the blowout loss of Game 2, Kelly allowed just one earned run across five innings, striking out eight and walking three.
Arizona Diamondbacks are the anti-establishment World Series contender
Last year, fans saw the Houston Astros take on the Phillies in the World Series. This year, those same fans are faced with a significant chance of having a rematch. For the Arizona Diamondbacks, a team not even expected to make the postseason, to now be within a game of the Fall Classic is nothing short of exceptional.
When the Snakes take to the field to take on Bryce Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, the entire baseball world will be watching. In the spirit of an underdog, it's a safe guess that most will be cheering for the D-Backs.
