Veteran closer Aroldis Chapman is fired up about his new deal with the Red Sox

On Tuesday, it was announced that Aroldis Chapman would be signing a one-year, $10.75 million deal with the Red Sox. His seventh team since he made his MLB debut in 2010, the veteran closer was no less excited about the development.

As the nature of the news transitioned from reports to confirmation, Chapman was following intently. When it became apparent that a deal was indeed to be made, the flamethrower took to his X account, exclaiming "Let's Go" alongside a picture of himself wearing his new team's cap.

"Let's Go" - Aroldis Chapman

Since the beginning of the offseason, Boston Red Sox president of baseball operations Craig Breslow has made it clear that his team is looking for backend pitchers himself. Last season, the Red Sox bullpen posted an ERA figure of 4.39 0 ranking 24th out of 30 MLB clubs.

Chapman, 36, spent last season pitching with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His fifteenth season pitching in MLB, the closer's 68 appearances marked the most since the 2013 season. Over the course of 61.2 innings of work, Aroldis Chapman went 5-5, tossing to a 3.79 ERA, and firing 98 strikeouts.

After defecting from his native Cuba, Chapman made his MLB debut for the 2010 Cincinnati Reds. In September of that year, the left-hander threw a pitch that registered at 105 miles per hour - a figure that still holds as the fastest pitch since record-taking began.

A two-time World Series champion with the Rangers and Chicago Cubs, Chapman brings a level of experience and capability to the Sox bullpen. For Breslow - who is a former Red Sox reliever himself - Chapman's profile certainly fits into the stated needs of his club.

Aroldis Chapman fits perfectly into Red Sox needs

At the annual Winter Meetings last month, Breslow spoke of his desire to acquire effective relievers this offseason, saying:

"When you’re bringing guys in with runners on base in leverage situations, the ability to get outs without putting the ball in play is really, really valuable”

While more moves will be required if Breslow wants his Red Sox to compete in the AL East this season, Chapman's acquisition is a shrewd move. He may not have the arm that he used to, but the Cuban certainly has more left in his tank, and will be a solid addition.
