As we get deeper into the season, things are getting bleak for the Houston Astros. After making the postseason every year since the 2017 season, they have looked like a shell of themselves.
Things went from bad to worse on Saturday during their afternoon matchup with the Washington Nationals. They lost to Washington 5-4 in extra innings after giving up three runs in the ninth and tenth innings.
Ryan Pressly and Seth Martinez were the relief pitchers who gave up the lead and ultimately, the game. They combined to give up three runs, leading to Houston's 15th loss on the season.
Houston is starting to dig themselves into a hole they might not be able to climb out of. They are already 4.5 games behind the Texas Rangers, who lead the division.
"At this point we’re just a bad team. Finding every way in the book to lose" - one fan posted.
"Season over I've seen enough" - posted another fan.
"Another blown lead" - posted another.
Astros fans are about at their breaking point with this club. They have not seen their team struggle like this in quite some time, and there is not much hope left around the fanbase.
"Abreu gotta go" - said another fan.
"Yeah no playoffs this year lmao" - said another fan.
"We are so finsihed" - said another.
Fans are calling for some players to go, like Jose Abreu, who has struggled mightily this year. However, he is one player with a history of slow starts, and typically gets it going later into the year.
What is going on with the Astros?
Things have not gone smoothly for the Houston Astros this year. They have been plagued by injuries, especially to their starting rotation, and have not gotten much pull from their offensive leaders.
Houston has seen five starters go to the IL, making them call up pitchers who may not have been ready. Spencer Arrighetti and Blair Henley both had rough debuts on the mound.
Offensively, Houston has had problems pushing runs across the board. Jose Abreu is ice-cold at the moment, hitting .073 through 17 games. He was supposed to be a fearsome slugger alongside Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve, but that has not been the case.
The team must dig deep if they want to get back to being one of MLB's most consistent teams.
