The Atlanta Braves are in store for a big 2023 but will be starting the season without their closer Raisel Iglesias. Iglesias will reportedly be placed on the Injured List and will miss the start of the regular season with a shoulder injury.
Iglesias is coming off a great season, where he achieved an ERA of 2.47. His 17 saves on the year is also a great number considering he played for two different teams. The Atlanta Braves acquired him from the Los Angeles Angels for their playoff push.
David O'Brien of The Athletic broke the news of the injury on Twitter.
The hope is that this injury will not keep him out of action for long since the Braves need to hit the ground running. Games in April and May are often overlooked considering how early into the season they are, but they matter just as much as September games. Having Iglesias back to secure wins sooner rather than later is of paramount importance.
Fans were frustrated at hearing the news and took to Twitter to express their opinion:
With the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies in the division, every game will matter for the Atlanta Braves. This is a lesson they learned last year when they came from behind and won the National League East crown via tiebreakers.
Raisel Iglesias will likely be looking to come in and make the save in playoff games this year if he is healthy. Being able to stay on the field hasn't been much of an issue for him in the past. Hopefully, for him, this is an isolated incident. As long as the team gives him the necessary time to rest and recuperate, fans' fears should be assuaged.
The Atlanta Braves will start the season at less than 100 percent, but still have enough talent to win against most teams.
Do the Atlanta Braves have the depth to overcome the injury to Raisel Iglesias?
The Braves have been one of the top teams in the MLB over the last few years, in large part thanks to their depth. Their bullpen is one of the best in baseball, filled with competent relief pitchers. Bryce Elder, Jake Odorizzi, and Jackson Stephens are all excellent options.
While they may not have a specialized closer for the start of the season, they have the tools needed to fill the role temporarily.
