Baltimore Orioles fans infuriated by CEO John Angelos remaining noncommittal on signing Adley Rutschman long term: "Pay Adley or we riot"

The Baltimore Orioles have one of the most exciting young players in the game in Adley Rutschman, but they may not have him for long. He is establishing himself as the best catcher in the league in just his second year. He just set an opening day record with an incredible offensive performance that included five hits.

Yet the team's CEO, John Angelos, is not making it clear Baltimore will sign him long-term. The Baltimore Orioles notoriously have a small payroll that has prevented them from truly making the leap to the next level in recent years. This has become especially infuriating after a report came out that put the team in the top five for profit.

Nathan Ruiz, a reporter for the Baltimore Sun, shared the comments from Angelos on Twitter. Angelos is the son of the Orioles owner, Peter Angelos.

Not seeing all the money possible going towards winning games is a tough pill to swallow for fans. The team has so much potential that it seems like it will remain untapped rather than make a push for a playoff spot. The Orioles' 10-9 win over the Boston Red Sox to start the MLB season on Thursday got fans excited. Then these comments deflated the fanbase almost immediately.

Being able to find and develop great young players doesn't end up mattering if a team won't pay to retain them. These small-market teams desperately want to see growth but are rarely willing to put up the capital to chase that growth. If Adley Rutschman leaves, it will be a dealbreaker for many longtime Baltimore Orioles fans.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, Oakland Athletics and Cincinnati Reds are other teams that often find themselves in this situation. It is becoming an increasing trend where these teams find and develop players for the big-market teams willing to pay the big bucks for them. The organizations may be fine with this arrangement, but fans are not.

Baltimore Orioles fans are already dreading the departure of one of their brightest stars in Adley Rutshman.

Will Adley Rutschman be an All-Star for the Baltimore Orioles in 2023?

At this point, betting against Rutshman would be a foolish endeavor considering how well he has done thus far. While increased playing time this season may require some adjustments for him, he will do just fine in the long run.

Before long, Rutschman could be a bona fide superstar behind the plate for the Orioles.
