Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell was ejected during their game against the New York Yankees on Friday for arguing with the umpire in the fifth inning.
Bell was arguing with the umpires after Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt was inspected by the umpires and sent to the dugout to wash his hands. This is the second time this has happened to a Yankees pitcher and fans were not happy with the umpires seemingly giving special treatment to the New York players.
The Yankees have been surrounded by controversy in the past few days since their series against the Toronto Blue Jays. It was starting pitcher Domingo German who was ejected from the game in that instance for use of foreign substance. Upon inspection, the umpires found a sticky substance in his palm and ejected him from the game.
This time around, it was Clarke Schmidt who was found to have a sticky substance in hands. After inspection from the umpires, he was sent to the dugout to wash his hands and allowed to continue playing after that.
Reds manager David Bell was arguing with the umpires and asking for clarity behind their decision when he was ejected from the game. Baseball fans saw this as the umpires being favorable toward the Yankees and made their feelings clear through social media.
"MLB protecting the yanks smh," Tweeted one fan. "The special treatment is crazy," added another.
Yankees finish the job after Reds manager David Bell is ejected from the game
The New York Yankees took their record to 27-20 in the MLB this season after their victory against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. They have moved above the Blue Jays and sit third in the AL East table. The Yankees have been on an upward trajectory since captain Aaron Judge's return from injury and are having their best run of the season so far.
Manager David Bell and the Reds will be eager to bounce back from their defeat and get their revenge on what they believe to be a favored New York team. They have two more games remaining in the series.
