The Colorado Rockies sent shockwaves into the league on the opening day. They trounced the star-studded lineup of the San Diego Padres 7-2 at a chilly and wet Petco Park on Thursday night.

The men from Colorado upstaged their opponents on the back of two homers and five runs from first baseman C.J. Cron. The Rockies had a combined 17 hits and absolutely dominated every aspect of the game, dampening a highly anticipated night for San Diego.

"Final," - San Diego Padres, Twitter

Fans expected a better showing, however, from a team vying for the World Series. With Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts at their disposal as their 2-3-4 punch, it's hard to understand how they went this badly.

Baseball fans mocked the San Diego Padres on Twitter after the game, ripping them apart for their humiliating loss.

While the likelihood of an undefeated season was very low, the Padres now have extra motivation to turn things around in short order. They will take on the Rockies once again.

Juan Soto had a disappointing season opener and was nowhere to be seen for most of the game. Fans will be hoping their star man returns to full form very soon.

It is going to take a while for the team to gel considering the team has engaged in some serious trade activity. While 98-99 wins in a season seems highly probable, only time will tell how well San Diego fares.

The Los Angeles Dodgers do look like serious competition for every team in their division at this point without a doubt.

Padres manager Bob Melvin thanks crowd for coming out in large numbers

While San Diego did not get the desired result, there was no denying that the atmosphere was absolutely electric at Petco Park.

Padres manager Bob Melvin paid tribute to the wonderful home support, describing what a fantastic feeling it was to walk out in front of them.

“It’s always fantastic when you walk out before the game here, really any night, but certainly on opening night,” manager Bob Melvin said. “The ovation everybody got. You look up Gallagher Square on a rainy night, it’s packed out there. And, you know, you want to play well. We did not do that.”

Melvin and the team will be hoping to brush off the disappointment of Opening Day very soon. They are slated for a rematch against the Colorado Rockies on Friday.
