The Oakland Athletics' slated Las Vegas move after 57 years in Oakland has not gone down well with fans. While the outrage from fans toward A's owner John Fisher has been quite evident at games this season, former Oakland pitcher Trevor May has been vocal about his opinion of Fisher since the move was made public.
May, who retired after a season with the Athletics last year, called out the owner after his retirement. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, May criticized Fisher's farewell letter released ahead of the A's home series against the Texas Rangers.
Fisher's letter, released on the A's official site on Monday, mentioned the iconic players and the team's numerous accolades during its stint in Oakland. Fisher also thanked fans and said he tried his best to keep the team in Oakland.
However, May said he didn't buy Fisher's words, alleging the letter was written by someone else. He accused the owner of hiding behind the letter by not addressing the outrage from fans and Oakland natives in front of a camera.
May wrote in his fiery post:
"Dear John, With all due respect, which is more than you likely deserve, save it. Be an adult. Get in front of a camera and say it with your chest. Releasing a letter, clearly written by someone else, and including a bunch of names you DEFINITELY do not know, is just disrespectful to those who love the team."
He also called out the owner for "trying" to keep the team in Oakland, which many felt wasn't the case.
"We tried." lol. The fact that you STILL think that anyone cares about that at this point shows, once again, your lack of understanding of WHY people love the game. You love owning stuff, just not your actions. Either stand up with pride or keep hiding. Pick one, we're tired.
Trevor May started his MLB journey with the Minnesota Twins in 2014 and played for the team until 2020 over two stints. He had a brief tenure with the New York Mets followed by a season with the Athletics in 2023, his last in MLB.
Atheltics' last three games in Oakland under scrutiny after team's reported measure to thwart fans
The A's will host the defending World Series winners the Texas Rangers for the final three games at the Coliseum. They will be temporarily moving to West Sacramento before their Las Vegas switch.
However, the final game in Oakland has enraged fans even more after the latest reports. Oakland players and manager Mark Kotsay are reportedly advised not to address fans after the game with the management seeking extra security for the series, fearing fan outrage at the move.
