New York Yankees slugger Anthony Volpe couldn't cash in in the sixth inning against the Boston Red Sox in their series opener at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. Entering the bottom of the sixth, the game was tied 1-1, and Cooper Criswell had the ball in his hand.

Austin Wells singled to left field, following Giancarlo Stanton's strikeout. Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled only to be picked off later. Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Rizzo were walked, forcing Red Sox manager Alex Cora to make a pitching change. Cam Booser came in relief with the bases loaded and two men out, with Volpe taking the next at-bat.

However, the shortstop couldn't capitalize on the opportunity as he lined out to left field.

Volpe was soon subjected to intense criticism from fans online. Here's a look at some of the reactions on X/Twitter:

"Of course it’s still tied Volpe can’t hit," one fan commented.
"If Volpe comes up with the bases loaded 1 more time I swear to god I’m gonna kill myself," another wrote.
"I don’t ever recall him getting a big hit," another added.
"Bench Volpe for a few games," one fan added.

Some fans pointed out that Volpe had left six men stranded on base:

"Volpe has had bases loaded twice tonight. He just can’t get a hit to save his life. SMH," another fan said.
"Classic. He’s stranded 6 runners on his own," one fan commented.

Anthony Volpe faces slump at wrong time of the year

It's that time of the year when players hope to hit their stride as they prepare for a run in the postseason. However, Anthony Volpe is struggling to get anything going from the plate.

The shortstop hasn't hit a home run in his last 10 games. In his last 33 plate appearances, Volpe has contributed three RBIs and six hits, a dismal .181 batting average. Add to that, he has zero walks and has been struck out 11 times.

Volpe will need to turn things around quickly if he wants to save himself a postseason spot. Not cashing in on a bases-loaded situation like in tonight's game won't help his bid.
