Blake Snell is hurling another gem of a season in the second half after initial concerns from his pitching. He threw his first career no-hitter, and with his contract with the San Francisco Giants having an opt-out in place after this season, entering free agency again could be a possibility.
Snell signed a two-year, $62 million contract in the offseason. However, he wanted a longer deal, something the New York Yankees provided but wasn't at par with the expectations of Snell and his agent, Scott Boras.
Amid rumors of opt-outs, Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer has the Yankees as the 10th most likely landing spot if the reigning Cy Young enters free agency. However, Rymer also mentioned that keeping Juan Soto after this season will be the Yankees' top priority.
"The Yankees were repeatedly linked to Snell last winter and they reportedly circled back to him ahead of the trade deadline," Rymer said.
"Yet Snell himself has indicated that the Yankees low-balled him last offseason, and their focus this winter will surely be on not low-balling Juan Soto."
For the Yankees, Juan Soto is certainly a top priority, but adding two-time Cy Young winner Snell would elevate their odds significantly.
It remains to be seen if the Yankees can make space for the contracts for Snell and Soto. They could take inspiration from the Dodgers, who did so by signing both Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto on long-term deals.
Blake Snell registers another record in Giants history
Meanwhile, on the mound, Blake Snell continues to impress GMs. After San Francisco's 4-2 extra-innings win over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum, Snell's 10 strikeouts outing helped him reach 55 in his last five starts. That's the most K's by the Giants pitcher in a five-game span.
Blake Snell has started six games since the All-Star Game and during that stretch, he has gone 2-0 with an ERA of 1.34 and 59 strikeouts.
