Blake Snell and Logan Webb were the top two pitchers for the San Francisco Giants last year. After opting out, Snell has officially landed with the LA Dodgers — San Francisco's bitter rival. However, Webb isn't upset about the move.
"I'm happy for Blake, man," Webb said on Thursday, via Talkin' Baseball. "He works his a** off. Great teammate, I'm super excited. I'm obviously not excited that he went there, but I don't know how you could turn down a $52 million signing bonus. I'm not mad at him for that."
Webb got an up-close look at how Snell worked last year and he believes the Dodgers got a hard worker and doesn't fault his former teammate for joining their rivals in free agency.
Snell signed a five-year $182 million deal, including a $52 million signing bonus. The pitcher was the first major domino to fall in this year's class.
He has now played for three of the five NL West teams: the Dodgers, Giants and San Diego Padres. He did that all in the last three years as he bounced around in free agency.
Blake Snell opens up on joining Dodgers in free agency
Although he likely could have signed almost anywhere, Blake Snell opted to sign with the defending champion LA Dodgers. For him, it was not a hard decision to make.
"It was really easy, just because me and (my partner) Haeley wanted to live here," Snell said on Dec. 3, via ESPN. "It's something we've been talking about for a while. And when you look at the team, you look at what they've built, what they're doing, it's just something you want to be a part of. Look at the first three hitters in the lineup. It's tough to go against."
Snell said it was "pretty exciting" to have players like Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman hit for him rather than against him like they often did in the past.
Snell also joins a deep rotation with Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow and potentially Bobby Miller, Dustin May or Tony Gonsolin.
