The Toronto Blue Jays surprised much of the MLB universe on Monday by finally being able to secure one of the most coveted free agents remaining on the market. The club reached an agreement with free agent slugger Anthony Santander, signing the All-Star outfielder to a five-year, $92.5 million deal.
The move is one that Toronto has been coveting all offseason, missing out on the likes of Juan Soto and Roki Sasaki, among others. By landing Santander, the Jays bring in a much-needed power bat who hammered 44 home runs last season and is still in the prime of his career.
While the move was a significant one, MLB insider Mark Feinsand spoke on the latest episode of MLB Hot Stove about where the team could go next. Even with the high-profile addition of Santander, Feinsand believes that the team could still look into other notable free agents ahead of the 2025 season.
"You think about it, they came into this offseason prepared to spend $50 million or so a year on Juan Soto. So, spending 18 and change on Santander is not going be like, alright, now we're done," Feinsand said.
One of the top names most heavily linked to the Blue Jays is Pete Alonso. The long-time member of the New York Mets has been one of the most prolific home run hitters in baseball behind only Aaron Judge, yet he remains available in free agency.
"Pete Alonso is a guy they're still interested in," Feinsand continued. "Now that it looks like the Mets are pivoting elsewhere, at least that's what we're hearing, Alonso's market is not great. Toronto is a team that could look at him on a shorter-term deal, higher AAV."
It will be interesting to see where the Blue Jays go from here. Even though Santander is a significant upgrade, the team is still needing to bolster the bottom half of the lineup. Feinsand also suggested that veteran Jurickson Profar could be another option for the team.
"Profar's got a number of teams interested, the Blue Jays are among them... I could see him being one of the next guys to fall," Feinsand added.
The Blue Jays still need to determine what they will do with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
While adding the likes of Anthony Santander and potentially Pete Alonso is major news, the team still needs to sort out what they will do with their current superstar, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The 25-year-old slugger is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025 season, making him potentially the next true superstar to hit the open market.
The Toronto Blue Jays will need to decide to either pay up and extend Guerrero to a long-term extension or look to trade him. According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, if the Jays were to trade Vladdy, they would reportedly be looking for a better package than what the San Diego Padres got when they moved on from Juan Soto.
