The Boston Red Sox haven't had the greatest offseason this year. They lost their All-Star shortstop, Xander Bogaerts, in free agency. On top of that, the team learned they would be without Trevor Story for some time.
This leaves them with a hole at shortstop. The man expected to fill this hole is Kiké Hernandez. The utility man has only played 100 games in the position over his nine-year career. Having played so few games at shortstop, one reporter asked if Hernandez had the resume to be the team's leader this year.
It's a fair question for someone who hasn't played that position that much and is coming off a hip injury last year. Hernandez dealt with a hip flexor strain that made him miss some time.
Boston Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom feels good about Hernandez manning shortstop this year until Story returns. As long as he plays his game and doesn't try to be someone he's not, Hernandez will find success.
"Good answer to a clown question," one fan tweeted.
"Chaim handled that perfectly too," said another fan.
Fans think Chaim Bloom handled the question well. Hernandez doesn't need to try to be Xander Bogaerts, and the team doesn't want to put that pressure on him. All Hernandez needs to do is play the game the way he knows how to, and he'll be just fine at shortstop.
Fans are backing Hernandez at shortstop until Story returns. There are far worse options at the position for the club.
It may be a long season for the Boston Red Sox
There's no timetable for Story's return; the shortstop had right elbow surgery in January. Story believes he'll be able to return at some point, but others aren't as sure.
The team will look to Rafael Devers to carry them on his back. Devers and the Boston Red Sox agreed to a 10-year, $313.5 million extension. The extension couldn't have come at a better time. Fans were starting to think that he would be gone, similarly to Bogaerts when his contract was up.
It's going to be a tough season for a team that plays in the American League East. It's one of the toughest divisions in all of baseball with the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, and the always-dangerous Tampa Bay Rays.
It will be interesting to see how this team stacks up against the rest of the division.
