Brandon Lowe has been ruled out of the rest of the season due to a knee injury. The Tampa Bay Rays are set to miss out on an important offensive as they gear up for the postseason after having clinched a playoff spot.
Lowe is one of the best second basemen going around. This season he has averaged .231 with 21 home runs, eighth highest for players in his position. He has walked at a rate of 11.5% and despite high strikeout rates the Rays batter has proved to be an above-average hitter.
The 29-year-old suffered an injury in the game against the Los Angeles Angels. He fouled off a ball on his knee and was seen limping afterward. He was removed from the game and taken for further imaging. When the results came out, Lowe was diagnosed with a fractured knee and would require at least 4-6 weeks of recovery time.
For the game on Friday night, the Rays installed Issac Paredes in second base. Curtis Mead took up his spot at third. The team is also dealing with other injuries at the moment with Randy Arozarena going day-to-day due to right quad tightness and reliever Jason Adam who was pulled from the mound due to a similar injury.
This is the worst possible time for Tampa Bay who were looking to consolidate their position in the AL East as they are two games behind the Baltimore Orioles at this juncture.
Brandon Lowe's late-season injuries examined
Brandon Lowe isn't a stranger to late-season injuries. The Rays infielder missed a chunk of the second half in 2019 with a bone bruise in his right leg. He returned for the postseason that year but that wasn't the case last season when his season ended due to a recurring back issue. His estimated date of return only leaves the room for Lowe to be back for a late return, if the Rays make it that far.
