Braves' resilience amid Ronald Acuna Jr. & Austin Riley absence commendable as it's like Phillies without Bryce Harper & Trea Turner, says ex-GM

Numerous analysts have appreciated the Atlanta Braves' resilience in holding on for a chance at the playoffs despite a tough season with injuries. After losing Ronald Acuna Jr. early in the season and Austin Riley last week, there have been unexpected contributions from other players that have helped them.

On "The Phillies Show" podcast, analyst Jim Salisbury and former Phillies' general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. discussed the Braves' situation.

"The Braves continue to show a lot of guts. It's amazing to me few days ago they are two back the Mets and the Mets can't put it away and lose one up there in Milwaukee. Hoskins has a big night. I have so much respect for them, they refuse to go away," Salisbury said [11:30].
"I mean they have lost two MVP types players on their team. Imagine the Phillies lost Turner and then Mudosa fill in really well, but you lose Turner and Bryce Harper and that's basically what they [Braves] lost," Amaro said.

Ronald Acuna Jr tore his ACL in his left knee in late May in a game against Pittsburgh. The Braves sliver was looking to back up his 2023 AL MVP season, where he inaugurated the 40-70 club with 41 homers and 73 stolen bases. This season he was batting at .250 with 15 RBIs and 4 home runs in 49 games played before he was shelved.

Austin Riley was able to compile more game time than Acuna, playing in 110 games before a fractured arm off a fastball by Angels' Jack Kochanowicz in a game last month. Riley had hit 19 home runs at .256 and was unable to achieve a fourth straight season with 30+ home runs.

Braves face off against the Mets in a postseason doubleheader decider

The Braves faced off against the Mets in a doubleheader on Monday to make up for two washed-out games from last week. They lost the first game 8-7 after New York staged a defiant comeback, scoring 8 runs in the last two innings, with Francisco Lindor homering to send the Mets to the playoffs. The Braves are still in the hunt, needing to win the second game to out-qualify the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Atlanta Braves had won six consecutive NL East titles heading into the season. However, they lost their crown to the Philadelphia Phillies and at one point seemed to be out of contention for the postseason, while the New York Mets found new momentum under their new manager, Carlos Mendoza.
