Breaking down Manny Machado’s contract

Dominican superstar Manny Machado recently signed an 11-year contract extension with the San Diego Padres. Following remarks from Machado himself about opting-out from the team after the 2023 season, the Padres’ front office finally agreed to what will be one of the biggest contracts in baseball history.

Manny Machado’s contract details

Manny Machado signed an 11-year, $350 millon extension. The contract will pay him relatively lower during the first three years, with a $13 million base salary each year and a $10 million payment on his $45 million signing bonus.

He will make $21 million in 2026 and then $35 million a year for the remaining seven years of the deal. Manny Machado’s contract also includes a no-trade clause and does not allow him to opt-out.

The reworked contract freed up a substantial amount of money for the Padres to pursue other star players, such as outfielder Juan Soto. Machado’s previous contract had base salaries totaling $90 million from 2023-2025. However, his new contract will help the Padres pursue more star power without having to pay big bucks upfront.

The player's flexibility could also allow the team to extend to other key players, such as Jake Cronenworth and Josh Hader. The goal, according to team executives, is cost efficiency achieved by subsidizing the team’s bigger contracts with key young players making less than $1 million.

Machado has become the face of the Padres franchise in his four seasons with the team, finishing third in National League MVP voting in 2020 and second in 2022. These were the only two seasons the Padres have made the playoffs in the past 16 years.

The Padres’ excitement over the team’s run to the National League Championship Series last season, and their continued investment in star players has helped the team realize record revenues.

However, team officials acknowledge that there is likely to be a ceiling to how high those revenues can go and how far they can push spending. Thus, the team will eventually need to stabilize and possibly decrease payroll spending.

Manny Machado’s contract extension allows the Padres to pursue more star power without having to pay big bucks upfront, freeing up money for the team to pursue other key players. It also secures the team’s franchise face for the next 11 years.

However, as the team continues to invest in star players, it will eventually need to stabilize and possibly decrease payroll spending.
