On Thursday, Oakland Athletics outfielder Brent Rooker took to Instagram to share a clip of Memphis Grizzlies star Luke Kennard's dunk from the game against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday. Just like many viewers watching the game, it appears Rooker may have also been surprised by what was Kennard's first dunk in five years.
"Get this man in the dunk contest right now @lukekennard5" Brent Rooker captioned his story.
Kennard, who was on the court for only 26 minutes on the day, played a starring role for his side, scoring 23 points and registering three assists. Those points eventually proved very important, as the Grizzlies won 132-120 in what turned out to be a very high-scoring encounter.
So far, the Grizzlies are having a great season, sitting third in the Western Conference standings, with a 29-15 win/loss record. Having missed out on the postseason in the 2023-24 campaign, things look much more promising this time around, should Luke Kennard and co. continue playing like they have so far.
Brent Rooker expresses excitement after signing new long-term deal with the Athletics
Outfielder Brent Rooker had a superb 2024 season with the Oakland Athletics, finishing with a .293 batting average, 39 home runs and 112 RBIs. The 30-year-old's strong performances were duly rewarded at the end of the season, as he picked up a Silver Slugger award for the first time in his career.
His franchise, also noticing the hard work that he had been putting in, offerred Rooker a five-year, $60 million contract, which the 2023 All-Star promptly accepted. Rooker took to Instagram to post a heartfelt message, expressing his excitement to continue representing the Athletics.
"I can’t even begin to express how thrilled I am to have the opportunity to represent this team and organization for the next several years. My family and I love the people here and truly believe in the direction that we’re headed. A special thank you to my family for the constant support, @bledsoeagency for always having my back and working tirelessly for me, my teammates for making it a blast to show up to the park every day, and to the @athletics for believing in me time and time again. Only 37 days until Spring Training!" Brent Rooker captioned his Instagram post.
Having enjoyed a tough season in 2024, Athletics fans will be hoping Rooker can have another solid season in 2025, potentially leading his team to the postseason for the first time since 2020.
