As baseball fans gear up for this year's Players’ Weekend, MLB announced some new introductions to the celebration. The athletes will wear specially designed New Era caps during the weekend of Aug. 16-18.
However, fans on Instagram aren't too keen on the design of the personalized caps and instead demand to bring back the custom uniforms with players' nicknames on the back.
"Bring back nickname jerseys instead of trying to make more money," a fan commented.
"This would be cool if the numbers didn't look stupid," wrote another fan.
"Wouldn't it be such a good idea if we let the players customize their jerseys too! Oh wait, you took that away from them!" another posted.
MLB fans seemed hung on the league's decision to not feature the personalized jerseys for the first time since the inception of the Players' Weekend in 2017.
"I speak for all MLB fans when I say please bring back nickname jerseys," wrote a fan.
"The nickname jerseys will forever be unmatched please bring them back," quipped a fan.
"Doing anything but bringing back the nicknames on jerseys," wrote another.
The "first-ever in-game personalized caps" will feature a number of players in unique styles. They will also be able to use customized cleats and customized bats during the Players' Weekend.
What can fans expect from MLB Players’ Weekend this year?
According to MLB's Theo DeRosa, the three-day celebration will be a themed event, with each day carrying out a particular theme for players. The first day, Aug. 16, will celebrate the players' personalities and will allow them to showcase their off-field interests.
The second day, Aug. 17, will give them opportunities to display their humane side as it showcases the charities and initiatives of the players' choice. Finally, the third and final day of the event on Aug. 18 will allow athletes to celebrate the people who played a major role in their success as baseball players.
Despite the frustration of the fans over the New Era caps, the excitement for the Players' Weekend remains palpable as it helps fans get a closer look at the personalities of their favorite MLB stars.
