MLB games are streamed in a lot of locations. Sometimes they're free. With the impending Diamond Sports bankruptcy, can that service offer free games during the regular season?
Eventually, Diamond Sports will be no more. They're going bankrupt and are expected to lose the streaming rights to the 14 teams they had, with four specific teams being lost sooner:
- Cincinnati Reds
- Cleveland Guardians
- San Diego Padres
- Arizona Diamondbacks
These teams are already in the red and are expected to be dropped. The league will then begin negotiating with other places to find a place for these games.
For the time being, though, the games will be streamed for free according to the New York Post:
"Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred will have the league take over the local broadcasts of the money-losing teams and stream them for free in their respective local markets as he negotiates with their cable companies for lower contracts, a source with knowledge of the discussions said."
Eventually, the free streams will likely go away. For now, they're available and fans should take advantage.
Why is MLB breaking off from Diamond Sports?
Diamond Sports, which streams sports through the Bally network, is going bankrupt. They're losing money fast and will likely be bankrupt very soon.
As a result, MLB is terminating their relationship since they can't pay the teams what they need to. They said:
"Obviously, our first choice would be that Diamond pay the clubs what they're contractually obligated to pay them, but because I guess I'm a contingency planner by nature, we are prepared no matter what happens with respect to Diamond to make sure that games are available to fans in their local markets."
Fortunately, the league was ready for this kind of situation.
