Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg shared a heartwarming update on his metastatic prostate cancer, which he was diagnosed with in January. On his radio show on Thursday, Sandberg revealed that he has completed his last treatment and is now cancer-free.
On Thursday at 11:30 am, two hours before he was scheduled to appear for a radio show, Sandberg received an update from his doctor, saying "no cancer detected," leaving him excited and grateful.
"I’m glad you asked. I’d like to make an announcement right here," Sandberg said on 670 the Score Thursday afternoon.
"At 7:45 this morning, I had my last treatment — All good. At 11:30 met my oncologist. He said the tests are great. Cancer undetected. Very manageable going forward. And that's the next plan. And just found that out two hours ago."
As Sandberg was updating about his situation, he couldn't stop tears rolling down, making it an emotional moment.
Earlier in January, Ryne Sandberg shared an update on social media that he was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer.
“To my Chicago Cubs, National Baseball Hall of Fame, extended Baseball Family, the city of Chicago, and all my loyal fans, I want to share some personal news. Last week, I learned that I have been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer," Sandberg wrote in his post.
"I have begun treatment, and I am surrounded by my loving wife Margaret, our incredibly supportive family, the best medical care team, and our dear friends. We will continue to be positive, strong and fight to beat this. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time for me and my family.”
Ryne Sandberg thanked doctors and nurses for the support he received
The former Chicago Cubs star was anything but grateful while expressing his thanks to doctors and nurses involved in his treatment after his January diagnosis.
"It's incredible," he said. "The doctors, nurses, like I said, the support. It's been quite the journey. But it's all come to a good conclusion here, so tears of joy are happening."
Earlier this summer, the Cubs unveiled Sandberg's statue at Wrigley Field, along with a special honorary ceremony hosted by Bob Costas.
Ryne Sandberg's HOF resume includes 10 All-Star selections and an NL MVP in 1984, among other accomplishments. His No. 23 jersey has been retired by the Cubs.
