Philadelphia Phillies insiders Jim Salisbury and Todd Zolecki, along with former general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., talked about the improvements that could be made to the squad in the offseason. With the likes of Anthony Santander, Teoscar Hernandez and Jurickson Profar potentially available as free agents, there has been much anticipation regarding who the organization decides to bring in to bolster the lineup.
According to Todd Zolekci, there is another option that is being overlooked: Tyler O'Neill. This season with the Boston Red Sox, O'Neill batted .241, with 31 home runs, 61 RBIs and an OPS of .847.
On Friday's edition of "The Phillies Show," Zolecki talked about why potentially bringing in O'Neill would be better for the Phillies, money-wise.
"Tyler O'Neill is a guy that could maybe play, maybe a corner spot for the Phillies," Zolecki said (timestamp 19:35). "He's a right-handed bat, has a lot of pop, got on base a lot this year. He's going to come cheaper than Anthony Santander, Teoscar Hernandez, Jurickson Profar probably."
Ex-Phillies GM sees Alex Bregman as good option for free agent acquisition
Amaro also weighed in on the matter and said that Houston Astros star Alex Bregman may be a great candidate for the Phillies to target. Bregman is the third-highest-paid third baseman in the major leagues this season, behind only Anthony Rendon (LA Angels) and Nolan Arenado (St. Louis Cardinals).
According to Amaro, Bregman's versatility makes him a great option for them.
"I like Alex Bregman," Amaro said (timestamp 21:27). "I think he's a good baseball player. He knows how to win, I have seen him since he was kid in LSU and I know that he is a baseball rat, he wants to be a really good player. He's one of those guys you can actually play him at second, third or short. I think he can be a Gold Glove player at either one of those positions. He's a good player."
After winning the AL East division title at the end of a successful regular season, there was a lot of hope amongst fans that this would finally be the season the World Series returns to Philadelphia for the first time since 2008. However, an electric New York Mets team eliminated them.
Setting their sights to next season, the Phillies will prepare to challenge on all fronts yet again and will have big decisions to make on who they'll add to their roster.
