Craig Counsell made his return to American Family Field in Milwaukee for the first time since departing the team to join the Chicago Cubs. In one of the most notable offseason stories for the Brewers, Counsell was a beloved figure in the organization, which may have changed for some when he decided not to re-sign with the team.
At the end of the 2023 season, Craig Counsell's contract with the Milwaukee Brewers expired. Although it was unclear whether or not he would return to the Brewers entering the offseason, there was some hope.
"The #Cubs today named Craig Counsell the 56th manager in franchise history, agreeing to terms on a five-year contract through the 2028 season. Welcome to Chicago, Craig!" - @Cubs
That hope quickly faded when he signed a five-year, $40 million deal to join the Chicago Cubs. After managing 1,332 games for the Milwaukee Brewers, Counsell opted to join their National League Central rivals, something that did not sit well with some fans.
Entering Monday's return to Milwaukee, the Cubs manager was uncertain of the reaction he would receive, saying “Cheer, boo, whatever, man." It did not seem to bother Counsell, who prioritized the enjoyment of the fans in attendance. "Just have a good time at the game. That’s what fans get to do," he continued.

Craig Counsell was indeed showered with boos from the home crowd
Although Counsell was unsure of what his reception would be during his return to American Family Field, it became clear immediately. The Milwaukee Brewers decided to honor their former manager with a video tribute, which quickly turned into the home crowd sharing their disappointment.
"The #Brewers put together a tribute video for former manager Craig Counsell. There is booing heard here at American Family Field. #Cubs" - @LilySZhao
It's safe to say that there is no love lost between the Milwaukee Brewers' faithful and the new manager of the Chicago Cubs. The fact that the two teams are within the same division makes it likely that this will not be the last time that Counsell gets an earful from the Brewers fans.
