The Chicago Cubs have reportedly agreed to terms with second baseman Nico Hoerner on a three-year deal worth 35 million dollars. This is a rare extension from the Cubs, who have seen many homegrown players leave the team in recent years. This could be the breaking of that trend that fans have been hoping for.Nico Hoerner is a solid defensive infielder and has shown he can handle the load of being an everyday starter. In 2022, he played 135 games and had a batting average of .281 along with ten home runs. Considering he is only 25-years old, the team hopes he can continue to develop, potentially even becoming an All-Star. Jeff Passan broke the news of the contract extension via Twitter.Jeff Passan@JeffPassanSecond baseman Nico Hoerner and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a three-year, $35 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Deal buys out one year of free agency, but Hoerner still will hit the market at 29. They have failed to live up to expectations in recent years, finishing 14 games under .500 in 2022. Retaining their good young players instead of losing them in free agency is certainly a step in the right direction.AP@TalksToPeople@JeffPassan This is a very player friendly deal.1@JeffPassan This is a very player friendly deal.Mausoleum Neeson@GLASSW4LKNice deal for an underrated player. twitter.com/jeffpassan/sta…Jeff Passan@JeffPassanSecond baseman Nico Hoerner and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a three-year, $35 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Now we go twitter.com/jeffpassan/sta…The Chicago Cubs also made a big swing in free agency this year by signing former Atlanta Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson. Swanson was one of the top free agents available, and for good reason. Now that the Cubs have locked up Hoerner, they could have a legitimately great infield group this season.Cubbies Gazette@CubbiesGazetteNico! Nico! The Milwaukee Brewers will still be a challenge to suprass, and the St. Louis Cardinals are by far the most complete team in the division. These moves are good steps in the right direction, which is what all the fans truly wanted.Corey Freedman@corey_cubsLove it. Seems fair on both ends. Cubs will want to see Nico stay healthy and continue to hit, Nico gets paid/doesn’t lock himself down for too long at a team friendly rate. Hopefully he continues to grow into a star and they extend him again on a bigger deal in a few years. twitter.com/jeffpassan/sta…Jeff Passan@JeffPassanSecond baseman Nico Hoerner and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a three-year, $35 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Wildcard spots will be at a premium this season, so winning the division may be their best chance of making the playoffs. Even with their additions this offseason, that is a tall task.If they are able to stay healthy, Hoerner continues to elevate his game, and Swanson is everything that was promised, they would be hard to bet against.
