The New York Yankees have some holes to fill with the MLB Deadline quickly approaching. They have already been at work, acquiring Miami Marlins slugger Jazz Chisholm Jr., but they are not expected to stop there.
The team is still linked with Chicago Cubs slugger Cody Bellinger, who Chicago has been dangling in front of interested teams for weeks now. He could be a huge upgrade to an offense that has struggled lately.
However, MLB Network's Jon Morosi revealed that Nico Hoerner and Mike Tauchman are on the top of the list for the Yanks. This is something that Cubs Baseball Channel host Mick Gillespie does not agree with. (Start at 6:30)
"If you are trying to win a World Series, I know Tauchman is a good player, but Cody Bellinger is potentionally like a difference maker. If he got hot for a team like that, I mean, look out," - said Gillespie.
While the Bronx Bombers are familiar with Tauchman, Gillespie believes adding Bellinger could take this team to a whole new level. His versatility alone would be a huge help for the Yankees. (Start at 6:42)
"I know they have [Alex] Verdugo in the outfield too, so they have been using Verdugo, [Aaron] Judge, and [Juan] Soto, but you throw in Bellinger, and he's instantly the best defensive outfielder of the bunch" - said Anthony Pasquale.
Co-host Anthony Pasquale also mentions the defensive value that Bellinger would hold. If acquired, he would easily become one of the best outfielders that the Yanks have.
Cody Bellinger's recent injury may limit the Yankees' interest
One of the reasons the Yankees are busy during the MLB Trade deadline is that they are a bit banged up. Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo have been down on the IL.
Stanton has been out since June 23 as he has been dealing with a left hamstring strain. Rizzo suffered an arm fracture bracing, after a collision at Fenway Park, and will not be available to return until August.
Cody Bellinger is also dealing with an injury himself. He fractured his left middle finger after being hit by a pitch on July 11. According to The Athletic's Meghan Montemurro, he is hoping to return soon.
This could limit the Yanks' interest in the slugger. The fanbase would come unglued if they traded for him and his health became a question mark while trying to contend for a postseason spot.
