It's easy to forget that Pete Alonso is also a free agent when much of the attention is toward Juan Soto's sweepstakes. Alonso, a four-time All-Star, has played his entire career with the New York Mets but is looking forward to his next destination.

Alonso is a cherished personality in the Queens. While the Mets fanbase would want him back, David Stearns & Co. won't be much inclined to offer him a long-term deal, as the first baseman is 29.

SNY's Andy Martino addressed Alonso's free agency and his potential fit with the Mets and the New York Yankees in case either team doesn't land Soto.

"I would say with the Mets, it's sort of a complicated situation with Pete Alonso," Martino said (4:50 onwards) on Foul Territory. "The attention would certainly turn, publicly, to, 'Okay, you didn’t get Soto, so what’s going on with Pete?' I’m sure Pete is eager to get his free agency going too, so that’d be something you’d hear more about.
"But the David Stearns-led Mets are not necessarily inclined to be the sort of team to give a very long-term deal to a guy heading into his early 30s, especially a first baseman, when there are players like Christian Walker and Carlos Santana on the market. I’m not saying Alonso is necessarily the priority, but turning to that situation and figuring it out would become a priority."

Andy Martino doesn't think Pete Alonso would be a good fit for the Yankees

If the Yankees don't land Juan Soto, Andy Martino feels there would be a lot of money they would have to potentially land Alonso. However, free agent starting pitchers like Corbin Burnes or Max Fried might be better fits, as per Martino.

In terms of position players, Martino said that Christian Walker and Carlos Santana could be the ones the Mets could get their sights on instead of Pete Alonso.

"I don't see Pete Alonso as a fit for the Yankees," Martino added.

Eventually, a lot will depend on how Juan Soto's sweepstakes turn out, after which the market for other available top free agents like Alonso and Alex Bregman will get going.
