The New York Mets have suffered an injury setback, losing second baseman Jeff McNeil for the rest of the season. McNeil was hit by a pitch in the Mets' win against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday and has been diagnosed with a broken wrist.
Currently, New York has placed Jeff on the 10-day Injured List. Outfielder D.J. Stewart has been recalled from triple-A affiliate, the Syracuse Mets, to take McNeil's place in the squad. The team announced this move via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.
The injury comes at a really inconvenient time for New York, who are chasing a playoff spot and need to finish in the top three of the NL Wild Card standings. McNeil has been in good touch in the second half of the season, and while Jose Iglesias' form will make sure he can deputize capably in defense, Jeff's offensive production is something his side might have much more trouble recreating.
Mets win thriller to jump into top 3 of NL Wild Card
The New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-4 at Citi Field on Friday, in what was a thrilling game of baseball. The hosts got off to a fast start as they took the lead in the first inning. The visitors, however, fought back with game-tying homers every time they were down to take the game to extra innings.
Number 2 batter Mark Vientos had a fantastic night at the plate, hitting two-run homers on two separate occasions at opposite ends of the game. The first one opened the scoring in the first while the second one won the game for his side in the bottom of the tenth.
The hosts will now be looking to sweep the Reds on Sunday. Wins are of the utmost importance for the New Yorkers at the moment, and fans will be hoping their side can add to their nine-game winning streak to maintain their advantage over the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card standings.
