It's been an interesting offseason for the Chicago Cubs as they look to revamp their roster ahead of a potential postseason run. The team made one of the most significant offseason trades by acquiring three-time All-Star Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros in exchange for Isaac Paredes, Hayden Wesneski and Cam Smith.
The Cubs also made a potentially impactful move last week by sending Matt Mervis to the Miami Marlins in exchange for Vidal Bruján. The front office has made a few notable changes this offseason. However, MLB insider Mark Feinsand reported on Monday that the team might not be finished yet.
According to Feinsand, Chicago has expressed serious interest in acquiring another versatile player into their clubhouse: Josh Rojas. The 30-year-old infielder may leave something to be desired at the plate, but he can be an incredibly impactful defensive weapon for the team as they look to make it to the postseason for the first time since 2020.
Rojas appeared in 142 games last season for the Seattle Mariners, posting a .225 batting average with eight home runs, 31 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.
It may be even more important to note that Rojas played nearly every defensive position for the team as well. While he spent most of his time at third and second base, Rojas also appeared in the outfield and first base and even pitched 2.0 innings for the Mariners.
The Chicago Cubs have a number of versatile players already on their roster. However, that depth took a blow when the team traded former NL MVP Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees.
If Chicago were to sign Rojas, it would be interesting to see how manager Craig Counsell shifts his defense around this upcoming season.
Chicago Cubs remain in hunt for one of the biggest free-agent pitchers
Josh Rojas might not be the only player who could find himself playing at Wrigley Field in 2025, as the club is reportedly one of the finalists in the running for the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes. Chicago met with Sasaki and his representation in the hopes of adding the Japanese phenom to their pitching rotation ahead of the 2025 season.
The 23-year-old pitcher is arguably the most intriguing player outside of MLB. Sasaki has been one of the hottest names on the market after being posted by his NPB club, the Chiba Lotte Marines. Thanks to fellow Japanese stars on Chicago's roster, Seiya Suzuki and Shota Imanaga, the Cubs could be a desirable landing spot for the young pitcher.
