The Boston Red Sox haven't made it out of the AL East division to bring October baseball to Fenway Park. They have struggled to assemble a roster good enough to make the postseason.
However, the front office is ready to splurge this offseason and bring back glory days back to Fenway Park. Free agent third baseman Alex Bregman is one potential candidate who could sign a big contract with the Red Sox.
Amid that, franchise legend David Ortiz emphasized the importance of complementing the club's solid pitching with a power-packed lineup capable of competing at the highest level.
"I think there are some guys out there still that we can go for. Okay? And I think we have a really good front office," Ortiz told Tom Caron via NESN.
"Pitching, to me, you know, to put a good lineup together nowadays, it's not that difficult. What you gotta do is just make it rain, you know, and you can go and pick a few guys."
Ortiz singled out current stars like Rafael Devers and suggested the addition of one more significant bat could elevate the offensive power.
With Alex Bregman among the names circulating in trade and free agency rumors, the timing of Ortiz's comments could be a signal for the Red Sox to make a major move.
"Now pitching, on the other hand, is the toughest thing to put together on a team, and we got pitching," Ortiz added.
"Pitching is always able to stop good offense. The pitching is playoff pitching—the pitching that we have right now, I believe. So we line up a couple of thunders in the lineup — the Kinghoff, Rafi, and the rest of them boys — and one good bat, I think we'll do it. There's one out there. We know that. Let's try."
Alex Bregman-Red Sox potential signing has a twist
There's a possibility that the Red Sox might not need to sign Alex Bregman. That's because St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, who had vetoed his no-trade clause to block a potential deal with the Houston Astros, is reportedly open to getting traded to Boston, as confirmed by MLB.com's John Denton on Thursday
This opens floodgates to a lot of variables. Since both Bregman and Arenado brings almost similar attributes apart from age and recent form, the Red Sox may go with an inexpensive option of Arenado, while reserving funds they would have given to Bregman.
However, Arenado is coming off a lackluster 2024 season, hitting only 16 home runs while averaging below .250. Whether he could return to his old form is a big question, though.
