David Peralta is set to become the newest member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. After a disappointing NLDS exit from the 2022 postseason, the team is looking to double-down on their depth to ensure they can go further next season.
Peralta, a 35 year-old veteran left fielder from Venezuela, is one of the ways that the Dodgers have attempted to pad their outfield. Perelta's acquisition sets the stage for some interesting combinations in the outfield.
"The first run of the game comes courtesy of David Peralta." - @ Arizona Diamondbacks
The Dodgers played Trayce Thompson and Chris Taylor interchangeably in left and center field last year. The challenge for the team now is to incorporate Peralta into a lineup that probably worked out even better than it was expected to in 2022.
Thompson tied his career-high in home runs last season, while Taylor is coming off the first All-Star appearance of his career in 2021. Moreover, the Dodgers signed former Boston Red Sox star J.D. Martinez to a one-year deal. Although Martinez can play the outfield, it is likely that he will occupy the DH spot.
After nine-and-a-half seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, David Peralta was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. Between the two teams, he finished 2022 hitting .251/.316/.415 with 12 home runs and 59 RBIs.
Peralta, who won the a Silver Slugger Award after a 30-home run season in 2018, has been declining offensively. He has, however, shown great ability to hit triples, leading the league with eight of them in 2022.
"David Peralta is signing a one-year, $6.5M deal with the Dodgers, per @JeffPassan" - @ B/R Walkoff
Under his new contract with the Dodgers, he is set to make $6.5 million on a one-year deal. He may not make the starting lineup, but will demonstrate his utility as a pinch hitter and veteran voice on the team. Good results this season could very well result in an extension for the aging outfielder.
With acquisitions like David Peralta, the Dodgers are serious about making a push in 2023
While David Peralta may not be a season-changing move, his arrival shows how keen the Dodgers are to cover all their bases this year - literally and figuratively.
With the San Diego Padres gearing up to pose real competition in the NL West, they will need to keep their options open. It remains to be seen how far the Dodgers can go in 2023, but there is a feeling they could upset the order of things.
