On Monday, the New York Mets announced legend David Wright's famous number 5 jersey would be retired on July 19, and the 42-year-old will be inducted into the organization's Hall of Fame.
Wright spoke to SNY, talking about the special feeling of performing at a high level for the Mets for so many years.
"Losing in a Mets uniform for me was devastating, but winning in a Mets uniform for me was sweeter than anything else that I could possibly imagine, because of the trials and tribulations of having gone through everything [with the team]. Being a Met for life meant more to me than a mercenary-type player." David Wright said
Drafted by the Mets in the 2001, David Wright spent all fourteen years of his big league career in Queens, going on to set the benchmark for quality in his position, and loyalty to the badge.
In his time at Citi Field, Wright earned seven All-Star caps, two Golden Glove Awards and two Silver Slugger awards.
David Wright looks forward to Juan Soto-Francisco Lindor partnership
The New York Mets made the biggest splash this offseason, completing the largest deal in professional sports history, as they they signed superstar Juan Soto to a fifteen-year, $765 million contract.
Soto joins the Mets after a superb 2024 season, as he went all the way to the World Series with cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees.
With shortstop Francisco Lindor also seemingly at the peak of his powers, the Mets seem to have a formidable one-two punch at the top of their order. Mets legend David Wright, for one, is looking forward to seeing how the two superstars work in tandem.
"The way Francisco Lindor has played since the Mets traded for him has been a plus. He's had some bumps in the road and the way he handles those bumps, I think proves that he's built for New York. And I'm sure Soto is going to be the same way.
"I think with the leadership that Francisco brings to that team, I think Soto can learn from that, and I'm sure Francisco is going to help Soto along the way." David Wright said, via the New York Mets' YouTube channel.
Having enjoyed a hugely successful season in 2024, as they made it to the NLCS for the first time since 2015, Mets fans will be looking forward to the start of the new season, hoping that the offseason additions to the squad can potentially inspire them to go all the way in 2025.
