“Definitely more in present-day value than Ohtani” - Experts predict Juan Soto's potential record contract to beat Shohei Ohtani's deal

It's safe to say that this upcoming offseason could belong to All-Star slugger Juan Soto. The New York Yankees superstar has yet to sign a contract extension with the club and is expected to hit unrestricted free agency, which could be one of the most anticipated in MLB history.

Last year, two-time MVP Shohei Ohtani landed a record-setting 10-year, $700,000,000 deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Notably, this deal has a present-day value of just over $430,000,000.

Ohtani's deal has a lower present value for several reasons, including inflation, deferred payments and inability to invest the money right now. Essentially, money right now is worth more than money in the future. And some agents believe that Juan Soto could top that present-day value in his next deal.

According to "Yankees Unloaded" host Gary Sheffield Jr., Soto could see a deal worth upwards of $600 million for around 13 years.

"Anyone that thinks Juan Soto isn’t worth $600M+ is either in denial or flat out foolish. No 25-year-old outfielder doing this in a contract year is getting anything south of 13-years, $600 million. Likely more" - @GarysheffieldJr

The New York Post asked 13 anonymous agents about how much they would expect Soto to be able to sign for this offseason. It is important to note that the agents who were questioned are not part of BorasCorp, the agency ran by Soto's superagent Scott Boras.

The responses gave an intriguing insight into just how much money and how many years the New York outfielder could potentially secure this offseason. On the lowest end, one agent predicted that Soto could settle for a contract similar to that of Mike Trout's deal worth $426,000,000 for 12 years.

As per the New York Post, one agent predicted Soto's new deal would be:

"Definitely more in present-day value than (Shohei) Ohtani's $437.4 million."

Another anonymous agent predicted that the 25-year-old could ink a deal worth 12 years for $600,000,000. Given his age and level of production, there is a chance that Soto at least flirts with the all-time record for free agent deals.

New York Yankees and Mets expected to be all in on Juan Soto this offseason

It's worth mentioning that Soto turned down a $440 million over 15 years contract extension from the Washington Nationals. Clearly, the young outfielder is looking to secure a bag, and it could come down to whichever team is offering him the most money and not necessarily the best chance to win.

"Breaking: The Nationals are open to hearing trade offers for Juan Soto after the star turned down a 15-year, $440 million offer that would have been the largest contract in baseball history, according to a report in The Athletic" - @espn

This is why some experts believe that both the New York Yankees and New York Mets are legitimate contenders to land Soto in free agency. It remains to be seen if Soto is basing his decision solely on the salary, as his connection with Yankees teammate Aaron Judge could give the Bronx Bombers an advantage in negotiations.
