For years, Derek Jeter and David Ortiz were adversaries on the field. Although the pair now share the same FOX Sports panel, that does not mean that all of their interactions remain seamless.
During the post-game coverage of Game 5 of the NLCS, Ortiz and Jeter were discussing the Mets' win when the desk was crashed by Mr and Mrs. Met. Although David Ortiz embraced the encounter, and decided to have some fun, Jeter did not appear pleased with the engagement, and eventually left the desk altogether.
"Papi going full Mr. Steal Yo Girl mode with Mrs. Met" - FOX Sports: MLB
Perhaps it was due to Jeter's loyalty to the New York Yankees, his team of two decades, or maybe the Hall of Famer was just not enamored with the display of affection. Regardless of his motives, online commenters were not exactly pleased with Jeter's reaction.
The overwhelming opinion appears to be that Derek Jeter came off as stiff, while his co-panelists were letting their hair down after a big game. Joining Ortiz and Jeter on the panel was Alex Rodriguez, who did not seem to be half as put out as his former teammate was.
"Jeter is such a loser" - claimed a fan
"What a frkn diva jeter" - derrided another
"Boring, arrogant, hateful, miserable person" - spat another voice of dissent
Since retiring from MLB action in 2014, Jeter has taken on a variety of roles. In addition to serving as an analyst on FOX, Jeter also married model Hannah Davis, with whom he has three daughters. In 2017, Derek Jeter also purchased a minority stake in the Miami Marlins, but has since sold out of the team.
"I’d be miserable too if my team were the marlins as well" - snarked a fan
"No bigger a**hole than Jeter." - lambasted another
"Only hired for his name" - wrote a final voice of condemnation
Contrast between Derek Jeter and David Ortiz on full display
Sometimes branded as aloof during his playing days, Jeter's reputation has certainly held. Contrasted to Ortiz and his often-funloving vibe, there was no better example of how Ortiz kicked off the sequence with Mrs. Met by saying:
“See Kevin when you win everything is shareable, I just make that up, everything is shareable.”
Although David Ortiz had both A-Rod and Kevin Burkhardt in stitches, it appears that Jeter is partial to an entirely different brand of humor.
