One of the top relievers available this year in free agency is Tanner Scott, who had a career year in 2024, with the Miami Marlins and then after being traded to the San Diego Padres. He finished the year with a 1.77 ERA and 84 strikeouts while going 9-6 and recording 22 saves.
Scott is reportedly looking for a benchmark-setting deal. Edwin Diaz and Josh Hader are currently the highest-paid relievers, earning around $20 million. Scott is reportedly looking for a similar paycheck if not more.
Dodgers analyst Scott Geirman addressed the team’s bullpen needs and the potential addition of Scott. Speaking on the Dodgers Territory, Geirman highlighted the challenges posed by Scott’s price tag and the team’s historical reluctance to commit to big-money relievers.
"If there's someone else out there, the big flashy name I see in chat is Tanner Scott," Geirman said. "I know that’s a big price tag, and that’s a hurdle Andrew Friedman and company haven’t really signed off on—adding a big-money reliever. But that’s someone who, Clint, would be another cherry-on-top moment for a team that feels completely put together.
"I can’t say with certainty that Andrew Friedman and Brandon Gomes will sign off on adding someone with that price tag. I know they’re okay with adding an incredible player, but as far as someone with that kind of price tag, if the number sounds right, Tanner Scott’s got to be on their radar."
Tanner Scott meets with New York Mets: Report
Scott Geirman also highlighted some rumblings from the Queens, citing a report from Will Sammon of The Athletic, who reported that a meeting with Tanner Scott had taken place.
"With relievers, they’re exploring the most expensive options available, and have met (likely via phone or video) with the top remaining free-agent option, Tanner Scott, league sources said," Sammon wrote.
The Mets have been on fire this offseason after a successful season which saw them make it to the NLCS. Though they lost, they splurged big by signing the likes of Juan Soto, Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea this offseason.
According to a report from Dodger Blue, Scott is looking to sign a contract worth $20 million annual salary over four years.
