The Los Angeles Dodgers boast one of the best lineups in baseball. They feature a historic top-of-the-lineup filled with MVP candidates. This is the primary reason they are one of the best teams in baseball and have a strong chance of winning the World Series this year. However, if one of them goes down, they'll need good backups.
The Los Angeles Dodgers' B team, the squad that would be next in line for opportunities in a crunch or with an injury, is also very important. While LA has top-end talent, its roster is a little top-heavy. So with that in mind, the backups become very important as the team tries to piece together the best roster it can for October.
Important Los Angeles Dodgers backups
The Dodgers have something that many teams do not: positional versatility. Mookie Betts is their starting shortstop, but he's a former Gold Glove right fielder and can play second base. He'd be a backup for some of those spots in a pinch.
Here are the primary backups for each key position on the roster:
- Catcher: Austin Barnes
- First Base: Max Muncy
- Second Base: Mookie Betts
- Shortstop: Miguel Rojas
- Third Base: Miguel Rojas
- Left Field, Right Field and Center Field: Andy Pages
- Designated Hitter: Max Muncy
The injury to Max Muncy throws things off a little bit. He would be the starting third baseman, but he's not. He's also capable of moving around the diamond, so he could play second or first as well.
There are also reinforcements in the minor leagues. The MLB players, of which there are usually just four on the bench, are not the only backups for an MLB team.
For the Dodgers, several players could be called up for short stints:
- Trey Sweeney, Shortstop
- Austin Gauthier, Utility
- Dalton Rushing, First Base/Catcher
- Diego Cartaya, Catcher
- Jose Ramos, Outfield
These players, many of whom are in AA right now, would only be called up in an emergency, but they could absolutely fill a backup position for the team if necessary.
